Drug Payment Scheme (DPS)
The Drugs Payment Scheme covers families and individuals for the cost of their prescribed medication. Under DPS, no family or individual will have to pay more than €144 per month for all approved prescribed drugs, medicines and applications.
Family expenditure covers;
- The nominated adult
- His/her spouse (including a person with whom they are living with is living as a husband or wife)
- Children less than 18 years
- Dependants over 18 and under the age of 23 years who are in full time education
- A dependant with a physical or mental disability or illness who cannot maintain themselves fully, who is ordinarily resident in the family home and who does not hold a current medical card.
All those who are ordinarily reside in Ireland are eligible to apply for the DPS providing they do not hold a current medical card. The Drugs Payment Scheme may be used with a Long Term Illness Book.
Persons who wish to apply for the DPS scheme must complete the necessary application form. The necessary forms are available from your local pharmacy. Once completed the application form must be returned to your health board.
Tax relief can be claimed on medical expenses (prescriptions and doctors fees). Relief can be claimed at the lower rate of tax for amounts exceeding €127 per person or €254 per family.
MEDICINES COVERED BY THE DRUGS PAYMENT SCHEME
A comprehensive range of the most modern therapies required to treat all conditions will be covered by the new scheme. Other essential non-drug items such as incontinence wear and dressings will also be available under the scheme.
